Obama’s Confusion About the 'Occupation' of Jewish-Palestinian Land

Obama’s Confusion About the 'Occupation' of Jewish-Palestinian Land
The president would probably be aghast if he were told that ‘the United States cannot permanently occupy Mexican land.’ Can 'occupation' lead to peaceful accommodation?

“Israel cannot permanently occupy Palestinian land,” said Barack Obama in his speech at the United Nations last month. By Palestinian land he presumably meant Judea and Samaria, the territory between the Jordan River and the lines delineated by Israel and Jordan in April 1949, in an armistice that followed Jordan’s participation in the combined Arab attack on Israel in 1948. Maybe he was also referring to the Gaza Strip, although that region is now under the rule of Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization, and there is no Israeli presence there.

Was it Palestinian land that Jordan annexed after the conclusion of the armistice with Israel? Nobody made that claim at the time, nor during the following 18 years when Jordan held that area.

Did it suddenly become Palestinian land only after Jordan joined Egypt and Syria in their war against Israel in 1967 and was forced to withdraw from the area? Or was it Palestinian land all along, while the Palestinian claim was left in abeyance as long as Jordan ruled the area and sprang to life only after the Jordanian army was defeated?

There is clearly some ambiguity about the Palestinian title to this area. Many Palestinians say Israeli “occupation” is not limited to Judea and Samaria, but also includes the State of Israel itself.

The Palestinian claim is obviously not consistent with the terms of the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine of 1922, which recognized the historical connection between the Jewish people and Palestine and called for close settlement of Jews on the land. So maybe the fact that the majority of the population living in the area east of the 1949 armistice lines is Palestinian is sufficient to claim title to the land, a claim that was not pressed during Jordan’s tenure?

Actually, this isn’t the only area on the globe whose ownership is in dispute. Obama would probably be aghast if he were told by someone that “the United States cannot permanently occupy Mexican land.” Yes, much of the United States – California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Texas – is territory captured during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, in a war of aggression. It was a war waged under the banner of “Manifest Destiny” – America’s destiny to extend its possessions to the Pacific Ocean.

“This is my land, from California to the New York Island,” sang Woody Guthrie, with the war against Mexico long forgotten, except maybe by the Mexicans.

Obama surely knows that his birthplace of Hawaii, once an independent nation, had been taken over by the United States in an 1893 coup, becoming the 50th state more than 60 years later in 1959. So who is the “occupier”? Can “occupation” lead in time to a peaceful accommodation as it did in California and Hawaii?

Obama himself was the commander in chief of an occupying army when he inherited the American occupation in Iraq. He decided to pull out and damn the consequences. The victims of the American exit from Iraq were the people of Iraq and the rest of the region, not the American people.

Some would suggest that Israel follow the same path. Get out of the West Bank, end the “occupation” and damn the consequences. But Israel cannot exit the region like America; Israel is here to stay. And the first victims of an Israeli withdrawal from Judea and Samaria would be the Israeli people, who could expect rockets to rain down on their cities.

The prospect for the Palestinian population after such a move also leaves little room for optimism. The exit option that was available to Obama in Iraq isn’t really available to Israel. The “occupation” of what Obama called Palestinian land may last a while yet.

  1. To me and to most Traditional Jews, Greater Israel is the Biblical Israel, which included a good part of the territory east of the Jordan River. The original allocation of Palestine to the Jewish people included territory east of the Jordan River and up-to the Railroad line which is about 120,000 sq. km.. The best defense is offense, no capitulation to Arab or worldwide pressure; we want what is ours no exceptions. See the minutes of the 1919 Paris conference, The 1920 San Remo Conference and the Faisal Weizmann Agreement of January 1919. The Arabs-Muslims received over 12 million sq. km. of which over half of it has no habitation, plus the British in violation of treaties and agreements gave away over 77% of allocated Jewish territory and created the new Arab-Palestinian state of Jordan and prohibiting Jews from living there and confiscating all their assets, and now the Biased U.N. and other nations who are misinformed, want Israel to cede Judea and Samaria as a second Arab-Palestinian state, after the disastrous ceding of Gaza. My response to that is it is not going to happen; this is Jewish land with a history going back over 3,800 years; Jews are the remaining indigenous people, with Hebron is the 2nd holiest city for the Jews with the Cave of The Jewish Patriarchs (The atrocities and murder committed by the Arabs in Hebron against the Jews goes at least as far back as 1517). The Arabs also terrorized and expelled over a million Jewish families and confiscated all their assets including businesses, homes and about 120,000 sq. km. of Jewish owned land for over 2,100 years; valued in the trillions of dollars. Most of the expelled Jewish families and their children were resettled in Israel and today comprise over half the population. Any Jew who wants to cede land to the Arabs has no place in Israel, especially in view of past results that such land for peace has brought more terror and violence and less safety and security for Israel and its people.

  3. Waleed bin Talal: Palestinians must end their occupation of historic Jewish lands in Judea and Samaria(the West Bank), Saudi Arabia is financially resourceful to help Palestinians dwell permanently among their Arab brothers
    Top News 07 October 2016

(Fri, Oct 7, 2016) Riyadh- According to the Saudi daily al-Watan, the Saudi Prince al-Waleed bin Talal has raised eyebrows once again among Saudi political circles as he announced his unwavering support for 'Jewish nation' and slammed Palestinians' obstinate refusal to accept the 'historical facts'.

"Please do not mix things, I, myself an ardent Muslim Arab, thus I cannot betray my fellow co-religionists, but this must not prevent me from uttering the truth and the truth cannot reveal itself to my Arab brothers unless somebody starts to educate them the true history and expunge all those entirely fallacious dogmas inscribed on their soul," al-Watan cited the Saudi Prince, a media tycoon as saying.

"I studies myriad of unbiased books and articles about Judaism and Jewish nation and I cannot be a sincere Muslim if I ignore what Lord has bestowed on Prophet Ibrahim (Peace Be Upon Him) when the Almighty gave all lands Ibrahim saw to him and his offspring forever, therefore, morally speaking, Palestinians are illegitimately occupying the historical Jewish lands in Judea and Samaria; the West Bank of the Jordan River," the pro-Israeli Saudi phenomenon said.

I do not say the vast majority of Palestinians are disloyal, added Prince bin Talal, but this is an established fact that many of them change horses in midstream, as a matter of fact, Palestinians are always complaint and howl about Israeli injustice but I have reports saying that Palestinian construction companies are providing the Israeli army with materiel and concrete to build separation wall ; I also have disdain for certain Palestinians for being annoyingly obstinate but the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is financially resourceful and I can guarantee that Riyadh will help them [Palestinians] to dwell permanently among their Arab brothers.

  6. No Jew has the right to yield the rights of the Jewish People in Israel -
    David Ben Gurion

(David Ben-Gurion was the first Prime Minister of Israel and widely hailed as the State's main founder).

"No Jew has the right to yield the rights of the Jewish People in Israel.
No Jew has the authority to do so.
No Jewish body has the authority to do so.
Not even the entire Jewish People alive today has the right to yield any part of Israel.
It is the right of the Jewish People over the generations, a right that under
    no conditions can be cancelled.
Even if Jews during a specific period proclaim they are relinquishing this right, they have neither the power nor the authority to deny it to future generations.
No concession of this type is binding or obligates the Jewish People. Our right to the country - the entire country - exists as an eternal right, and we shall not yield this historic right until its full and complete redemption is realized."

(David Ben Gurion, Zionist Congress, Basel, Switzerland, 1937.)

"No country in the world exists today by virtue of its 'right'.
All countries exist today by virtue of their ability to defend themselves against those who seek their destruction

  7. The Arabs do not belong in Greater Israel. They have over 12 million sq. km. they received after WWI, they have Jordan which is Jewish territory and they have the homes and over 120,000 sq. km. of land the Arab countries confiscated when they terrorized and expelled over a million Jewish families who now reside in Israel. When you practice hate, terror and violence, I do not want you near me. Arabs get out now out of Israel, that includes the silent majority, that by not objecting they become complicit to the violence.
Any Jew that thinks all the land of Israel does not belongs to the Jews has a choice to leave Israel. Is it not enough that the Arabs/Muhammad killed and raped the Jews in Medina which was a Jewish city going back thousands of years, and the Arab countries terrorized and expelled over a million Jewish families and confiscated all their assets including homes and over 75,000 sq. mi. of Jewish owned land for thousands of years. Those expelled Jewish families and their children now live in Greater Israel. Death to all terrorists is a must, no mercy. The Arabs also have Jordan which is Jewish territory established as the new Arab state for the Arabs in Palestine.
The Oslo Accords are null and void as Stated by Abbas at the UN in the summer of 2015. The Arab/Palestinians never abided by its terms and never intended to abide by its terms. It was a deceptive way to get control of the territory as a prelude to commit terror and take over the rest of Israel. The best example you have is the terrorist state in Gaza and the increased terror and violence from the Arabs in Judea and Samaria aka The West Bank. The Arab/Palestinian state was created in Jordan which is on Jewish territory. All the territory west of the Jordan River must be taken back under Israeli control. That includes Gush Katif and all the Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip vacated by Israel Ariel Sharon in 2005. The Arab PA must be dismantled.

  8. Israel must build at least 100,000 housing units per year in Judea and Samaria for the next 10 years and more. It also needs to build 3 secure superhighway connecting Judea and Samaria to Israel.
Construct extensive military bases in Judea and Samaria to protect the people and the country.
Israel also needs to build at least 50,000 housing units per year in greater Jerusalem. Open Atarot airport and a high tech center and more industry, and build many additional roads and secure highways in and from Jerusalem with expanded rail system.
Israel must also build a minimum of 10,000 housing units in the Galil and 10,000 housing units in the Negev every year for the next ten years and expand the infrastructure, roads and highways. They have to expand industry and commerce to enhance the desire of people to live in the Galil and the Negev.
Construct military bases and local agencies in Judea and Samaria to protect and help the people and the country.
    YJ Draiman
P.S. The Arabs have already an Arab Palestinian state which is on Jewish land over three times the size of Israel, east of the Jordan River; it is called Jordan where 80% of the population are Arab Palestinians and the Arabs in Judea and Samaria have a Jordanian passport.
Oslo accords are null and void. Israel must dismantle the Arab PA and include Judea and Samaria as a continuous part of Israel. Transfer Arab population to Jordan, Gaza and to the homes and the over 120,000 sq. km. the Arab countries confiscated from the Million Jewish families they expelled who now reside in Israel.
